Do u burn the midnight oil?
If TOI (education times) wasn't at your door step today, check this out. Well, I found this article quite convincing. Just to add -if u have sound sleep daily - I guess u need not waste your time reading this!!
"LATE NIGHT LESSONS
Of late there is an increasing number of individuals who complain of various academic problems. Some can't study while others despite studying ,do poorly in their examinations. Some even complain that they do not feel like studying or feel mildly depressed, while others have even been prescribed anti-depressant medication by the doctors.
Percy is a case in point. A contentious child,he worked hard on preparing for his standard XII board exams and CET.He began drinking large quantities of coffee at night and would sleep for just a few hours. He also aquired a collection of loud alarm clocks so that he would be on time for his early morning tution classes.
But despite all the hard work, he kept making careless mistakes and lost a lot of marks. The tranquillisers prescribed by his family doctor only made things worse. Even after sleep-deprivation was narrowed down as a possible cause, he kept arguing,"sleep is a waste of time!"After much persuasion ,he agreed to try sleeping longer for a few weeks just to see what happened.Within days, his mother noticed the difference:he looked happier, was less irritable and was doing much better at studies.
Like Percy, there are an increasing number of 'sleep deprived' youngsters.Sometimes, youngsters, because of their studies or long hours spent playing computer games, surfing or chatting with friends on net or even watching television, get very little sleep. Scientific research shows that sleep is important to health and sleep deprivation aggravates and increases the risk of developing a number of psycological and physical illnessess including heart attacks and obesity.
Recent research by sleep reseacher psychiatrist Dr Guillo Tononi of the university of Wisconsin shows that even the friut flies sleep!
Indeed, it is a universal phenomenon in the vast majority of living species. Most importantly, he has found that adequate sleep enhances creativity, learning and memory. Some of the most creative insights and discoveries occur during sleep!
Most youngsters need 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night, though some need up to 10 hours. In late adoloscence, there is a spurt of growth and maturation in the brain and during this period the individual needs much more sleep. While these small 'sleep debits' can be made up by sleeping more the next day, it is not a good idea to sleep for a few hours on weekdays and then try to make it up over the weekend.
Stimulants like caffeine in coffee, tea, colas and energy drinks may give a temporary sense of wakefulness but they interfere with the quality of sleep and induce anxiety. After using stimulants, some students follow it with tranquillisers to counteract the effect of the stimulants. We know that they actually worsen the quality of sleep due to supression of phase of sleep called rem. During rem sleep, one dreams and it is believed that during this stage of sleep the brain does it's housekeeping connecting new data with old and removing all that is unnecessary so that we are not overwhelmed by extraneous stimuli and learning.
One must learn to appreciate the need for sleep and allow one self as much sleep as needed. The best indicator that one has had enough sleep is if one wakes up feeling fresh and remains that way through the day. Often, prolonged sleep deprivation or stimulant abuse lead to insomnia and one has to learn how to sleep well.
A little time spent learning to effectively manage one's time and learning enhancement techniques can help free up the time to enjoy one of the few luxuries of life for which one does not have to pay anything!

I only don agree with the 4th point coz we have heard 4rm xperienced people n observed 2 that studyin early morn helps a lot....n it says to work up late night n not 2 study in morn

these concepts rather form a part of the general social prejudice as is held by r ancestors(or elders..if u don't want to b so rude)..
n to hell with that psycho psychiatrist..a psychiatrist shouldn't b so indifferent towards the wider horizons of psychology which can't b governed by a bundle of pre-set rules..every individual is dfrnt yaar..no point of adapting urself according to others' ideas..
waise true.."Some of the most creative insights and discoveries occur during sleep!"..u know Benzene's hexagonal structure was discovered by Augusta in his dreams!!..

I doubt if these "hard workers" nvr burned thr midnight oils to reach where they r now...
I searched TOI just for this article but I couldn't find it..n pls they just need some stuff to fill up thr pages n moreover they r in the clear its none of thr faults..every theory is followed by some n dismissed by others..

Whoa! I need to exercise for hrs to sleep??
>>4.Do not wake early morn unless >something really urgent comes up
You just need to get enough sleep. Doesn't matter when.
Sleep Deprivation is a common problem and many people don't know when they are getting less sleep. Can cause a lot of problems, physcially, mentally and socially.
